How did Madonna di Campiglio come to be a famous, international skiing destination? When was the first edition of the legendary 3Tre?
Interesting facts on skiing and the 3Tre in Madonna di Campiglio
THE FIRST SKI LIFTSFar back in 1947, the Società Funivie Madonna di Campiglio was founded with the aim of promoting skiing and, therefore, the town.
The first lift was opened in 1935: a sledge lift constructed by an engineer by the name of Unterrichter from Trento, which reached Cima Dosson dello Spinale from Malga Campo in Campo Carlo Magno (along the route now taken by the Nube d’Argento and Nube d’Oro chairlifts).
It was at Spinale, two years later, that the first major ski races were contested, known as the “littoriali”. In 1938, a sledge lift was built from the Miramonti zone to Malga Patascoss; a chairlift to Spinale followed in 1947; and during the 1950s the “5 Laghi” cable car and a number of other draglifts were built.
THE 3TREThe first edition of the 3Tre race, which remains one of the most beautiful descents in the world of skiing to this day, came to Madonna di Campiglio in 1957. The name represented the innovative structure of the race, which was made up of three competitions in three different disciplines: downhill, special slalom and giant slalom.
