Rifugio Maria e Alberto ai Brentei | 2,175m (7,135 ft)
Location
Madonna di Campiglio
Description
For a great many years, this lodge was the home of Bruno Detassis, the custodian of the Brenta Dolomites and legendary local mountaineer who opened hundreds of climbing routes and helped create the Via delle Bocchette trail. At the heart of the upper Brenta valley, the lodge is situated along the natural route that crosses this mountain range. Inside the lodge, you will find a series of black-and-white photos on the walls that tell the story of these places, while a bit further up the mountain, a stone chapel commemorates those who have lost their lives in the mountains. Accessible to the whole family, it is one of the most popular and most loved of all of the Dolomite mountain lodges.

Situated in a natural mountain meadow, Rifugio Brentei is in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites, directly across from the majestic north face of Crozzon di Brenta, the Canalone Neri gorge, Fracingli, and many other famous peaks, and is also at the base of various climbing walls. Photographers will enjoy trying to get the best shot of Crozzon and of landscapes in the Brenta and Rendena valleys below. A few minutes’ walk up past the chapel, you will find a magnificent view of the upper Brenta valley and the natural amphitheater formed by Crozzon, Cima Tosa, Cima Margherita, and Brenta Alta as well as, to the left, by Campanile Alto and Campanile Basso and the various rocky spurs of Sfulmini.
Time
Like at all the lodges located in the center of this range, the sun is at your back in the late afternoon as you look at Brenta. At this time of day, you can make best use of the light as it hits the peaks named above and take advantage of shadow and contrast.
