The Adamello-Presanella glaciers and valleys

Land of water and icEThere are some peculiarities that make Adamello and Presanella very fascinating: the Presanella mountains have 7 glaciers, while in the Trentino part of the Adamello there are 17 glaciers, among which the Mandrone glacier, the widest of the Italian Alps. Besides, Cima Presanella peak (3558 m.a.s.l.) is the higher mountain of Trentino. On Adamello ridges, between 1914 and 1918, there was the highest battle front of the Great War. Here, at 3.000 m.a.s.l., in snow and ice, the Adamello Gret War took place and today there is a museum dedicated to it in Spiazzo Rendena (20 km from Madonna di Campiglio).

the fallsA mountain hike at the foot of these glaciers is an unforgettable experience. Throughout the trip, you find forests of beech and fir, green meadows, glacier lakes, clear streams, and spectacular waterfalls. Indeed, it is the glaciers of the Adamello-Presanella Group that provide the water for the spectacular Nardis and Lares waterfalls in the Val Genova valley.

Carè AltoThe other valleys lead to equally stunning trails. the Carè Alto, at 3,463 meters (11,362ft), dominates over the S. Valentino and Borzago valleys, with the massive Mount Adamello in the background. On the Presanella side, Val Nambrone stretches narrow and wild towards the marvelous Cornisello lakes.

Other exceptional vistas make the Adamello and Presanella a stunning mountain group. At a height of 3,558m (11,673ft), Cima Presanella is Trentino’s highest peak. The glacier of the Adamello group is the most vast of Italy’s glaciers. It was the highest front during World War I and the theatre for the Great White War of Adamellina, and was visited on several occasions by Pope John Paul II, the first time in 1984, when he skied with the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini, and the second time in 1988.
