An exemplary case of camouflaged military work in the landscape
Between 1909 and 1915, on the slopes of Mount Nozzolo (1,054 m), the Austrian Genius built the last imposing fortress, to integrate and strengthen the Barrier of Lardaro. Forte Carriola, built according to the most advanced war criteria of the time, was one of the last works of military engineering to be built in Trentino by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. An exemplary case of armoured military work, perfectly camouflaged in the landscape, it was divided into three cores: the main casemate, for the garrison housings, the block of the howitzer battery and a large concrete bonnet used as a post for combat. Armed to the teeth, it had an engine room equipped with electric current to maneuver heavy firearms (howitzers and cannons) as well as numerous stations for machine guns. The fort was not damaged during the conflict, but was partially demolished later by the recoverers intent on extracting the iron from the armor.
