Location
Madonna di Campiglio / 5 Laghi
Description
A jewel of a lake in a natural basin with a stunning view of the entire Brenta group.
Access
ESC | QP 2,050m (6,725 ft) | QA 2,100m (6,890 ft)
Primary: At the top of the 5 Laghi gondola lift, take the trail at the back of the lodge/restaurant, which will take you along the side of the mountain to Lake Ritorto in about 40 minutes. The trail is not difficult and is suitable for the whole family, but caution is required as it crosses diagonally across a steep slope. Steel cord is provided during the first section to increase safety
Alternate: The lake may also be reached by way of a relatively easy, 1-hour hike up from Malga Ritorto (reachable by way of a shuttle bus service from Patascoss during the tourist season or by car during the off season). You may return along the same trail or make a circuit to the 5 Laghi gondola lift for the descent into the center of town. Starting altitude 1,747m (5,730 ft), elevation gain of 300m (985 ft).

Season
From spring through autumn with a range of creative possibilities from season to season (flowers in spring, colors in fall).
Time
For a shot of the lake with the Brenta group in the background, we recommend arriving on site in mid- to late-afternoon in order to have the sun to one side or nearly behind you. Keep in mind that the lake attracts a great many people during the high season, especially during the central hours of the day (and is popular outing for families in the summer), in part because it is the first stop on the 5 Laghi itinerary, which is one of the most popular during the summer. During the tourist season, take note of the operating times of the gondola lift if you want to return that way. Alternatively, you can head down along the trail to Malga Ritorto (45 min.).
Notes
ND filters and tripod for long exposures (silk effect).
