Chiesa San Giovanni Battista

Chiesa San Giovanni Battista title=

Valuable medieval church remodeled in the sixteenth century. Its granite water basin is linked to a singular legend: those who wished to have a child put their heads in the hole in the stone.

This medieval church was renovated in the 16th century and, on that occasion, frescoed by Simone Baschenis. On the main façade there is a large granite portal with a cross carved on the lintel; on the left a Saint Christopher frescoed with saints and Rhenish landscape in the background; above the portal there is a Madonna with Child and angels, Saints Antonio Abate and John the Baptist. The walled granite holy water basin is connected to a singular legend: those who wanted to have a child put their heads in the hole in the stone. The place where the church stands is called Castèl: on the plateau just above, at 890 meters, popular tradition places the primitive town of Maximenus, which would have been buried by a landslide or destroyed by fire.
